Currently there are no Early Childhood Activities open for bid at this time.
The following is a list of the 2009-2010 & 2009-2011 approved activities:
1. Child Care Resource & Referral (2 years):
Contract
awarded to McDowell Technical Community College
This program provides childcare referrals and information on topics
such as quality child care, child development, and parenting. Training
opportunities are offered for childcare providers along with technical
assistance.

McSmiles (2 years):
Contract awarded to McDowell County Schools
This part-time mobile preschool program is based in school buses
that have
been
fitted with the essential play centers to deliver age-appropriate
preschool
activities.
McSmiles serves 3-5 year olds in various locations
throughout the county.

Family Resource Programs: Part-Day Preschool (2 years):
Contract awarded to McDowell County Schools
Part-Day preschool programs that serve children age 2 - 5 years old
in
centers
that provide learning opportunities for children and build on the
family's
capacity
to help their children enter school healthy and ready to learn.
- First Steps (2 years):
Contract awarded to the McDowell Hospital
A home visiting program offered to ALL new Moms who are otherwise
not eligible for established home visitation programs, like Medicaid.
New parents receive a home visit from a Registered Nurse experienced
in obstetrical and newborn care, and lactation.

Family Resource Programs: Family Support (2 years):
Contract awarded to McDowell County Schools
A program which addresses family literacy and parenting through
parent
support groups and parent-child activities. Programs include F.A.S.T.,
Family Reading Adventures, and Circle of Parents.

Healthy Start (2 years):
Contract awarded to the McDowell Hospital
An intensive home visitation program that serves children from birth
to
age three and their families. Home visits are made weekly by a trained
Family Support Worker for bonding, child development, and home
safety.
7. Professional Development Supplement (1 year):
Contract awarded to McDowell Technical Community College
A
program for early education professionals designed to improve the
quality of
child care by focusing on increasing teacher retention rates
and education
levels.
8. Quality Support Bonus (1 year):
Contract awarded to McDowell Technical Community College
This
project will make available monthly bonuses to qualified, licensed
early
childhood programs that have demonstrated a commitment to
quality care
by ensuring higher teacher education and licensure
requirements.
Any contract awarded by the McDowell County Partnership
for Children & Families
will be considered for renewal only after a satisfactory evaluation of program
and fiscal
performance and contingent upon the availability of funds.
